Polar fleece is a soft napped insulating synthetic wool fabric made from PET or other synthetic fibers. One of the first forms of polar fleece was created in 1979 by Malden Mills as a new, light and strong pile fabric meant to mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool.. Polar fleece is also known as just fleece, and is primarily used in high performance outdoor clothing like womens mittens, mens mittens and baby mittens made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. These mittens are very light and easy to wash. Thinsulate®, a registered trademark of 3M, was first introduced in 1978 as "warmth without bulk". Thinsulate® fibers are only 15 micrometers in diameter, which is thinner than the polyester fibers normally used as insulation for winter clothing such as gloves, mitts, women’s mittens, men’s mittens or winter jackets. Thinsulate® is more effective for keeping you warm due to the increased density of fibers with decreased size versus polyester fibers. The gaps between the fibers reduce heat flow and also allow moisture to escape while retaining some of the heat produced by the body for comfortable warmth.

For a given thickness of material Thinsulate® provides approximately 1.5 times the insulation ability of duck down while at the same time being less water absorbent and much more resistant to crushing.
